New choral conductor appointed

Posted by Webmaster - 13 September 2000

Edward Lewis, former Chairman of Gli Amici della Musica, will exchange his chair for a baton as he takes over as Choral Conductor of the Society with effect from the Christmas 2000 season.

Ed studies at Pembroke College, Oxford, where he is in the third year of his degree in Music. A keen singer himself, and an invaluable member of Gli Amici's tenor section in the past couple of years, Ed aims to direct the choir in a diverse range of music.

In his first season he will start with English music from either end of the spectrum, from the Tudor composers William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, and pieces from contemporary composers.

Gli Amici's latest concert triumph

Posted by Webmaster - 13 September 2000

Gli Amici della Musica, Dorset's leading young musicians, played to a packed house in Christchurch Priory on Saturday 2 September as their Summer season concert drew a sell-out audience of more than 330.

The crowd was captivated by a powerful performance of Saint-Saens' unorthodox Organ Symphony, under the baton of Daniele Rosina, and a moving rendition of Durufle's Requiem in an all-French programme.

Under the baton of Daniel Spreadbury, outgoing choral conductor of Gli Amici (from 1997 to 2000), the 50-strong choir gave a well-crafted performance, capably matched by the two fine soloists, soprano Elizabeth Slade and baritone Jeremy Carpenter. Organist Sean Tucker provided a very creditable account of the difficult score from the Priory's newly-refurbished organ.
